June2014_Moreton Bay Region Art Awards: Sculpting Excellence

The hand-forged steel work entitled “GUST”, by Dayboro’s David Bradley was an eye-catching favourite, even though missing out on a prize.  Having your artwork accepted as an entry in these awards is noteworthy.  The actual winners are at the whim of the judge and their art preferences.

A sculpture depicting the oak tree where King Charles II hid during the English Civil War and a painting of “sugar bags”, the honey of Australia’s native bees, are the winners of this year’s Moreton Bay Region Art Awards.
The two pieces were awarded the major prize during the awards ceremony on May 16 at the Strathpine Community Centre.
Deputy Mayor and Division 9 Councillor Mike Charlton presented the major prize winners, James and Eleanor Avery and Josie Kunoth Petyarre, with $7,500 for their artistic excellence.
“The Moreton Bay Region Art Awards continues to demonstrate the creativity, passion and skill of artists in our region and throughout the country,” Councillor Charlton said.
“I want to congratulate the winners and all those who participated in this year’s awards.
“The judge was captivated and impressed by the works on show and described the winning pieces as both emotional and awe-inspiring.”
The two works will become part of the Moreton Bay Region Art Collection.
Division 10 councillor, Brian Battersby said the Local Artist prize was awarded to Paul Saxby from Ferny Hills.
“It was an honour to present Paul with the award and $1,000 prize for his painting Green House Dreaming,” Cr Battersby said.
The Merit Award winners were:
Sam Scoufos – Tim Skiizz
Paul Snell – Shift #201316
Katrin Koenning – Elwood Scene #1; and
Cameron Eaton – Rainbow Glitterbombs.
Unfortunately the Art Awards, the exhibition will have been dismantled before this edition is out.
