June2012_Happy 100th Birthday Aunty Eunice

A chorus of “Happy Birthday Aunty Eunice” was sung by a large number of relatives of Eunice Hope Rose (formerly Williams) on Sunday 29th April 2012 at the Dayboro Show Grounds.  The Rose and Williams families came together on the day to celebrate the long life of a very gracious lady.
Eunice was 100 years old on the 2nd May.  She received congratulatory cards with messages from Queen Elizabeth II and the Governor General Quentin Bryce and a letter from the Prime Minister Julia Gillard.
Eunice is the only child left of a family of nine born to George Williams and Louisa (Juffs), so she is still keeping a motherly eye on her family.  Her six sisters, Lily Stubbings, Julia Sinnamon, Violet Brockhurst, Olive Sinnamon, Gwen Weston, Brenda Williams and her two brothers Charlie and Syd Williams have predeceased her.
Eunice and her late husband Athol had three children, Mervyn, Keith and Miriam.  She has been blessed with 5 grandchildren.
She had a very purposeful look on her face as she cut her 100th birthday cake.  The cake was made and iced by Lauren Simpson (Rose) one of her grandchildren.
Her nephew, Laurie Stubbings (son of eldest sister Lily) congratulated Eunice on achieving 100 years.  He went on to say that during the 100 years of her life she had seen many changes in the way people lived.  The benefits of electricity, phones, cars, planes, medicine and advances in communications means life for the younger generation now is completely different to the time when she was young.
He remarked how the older generation (our mothers) kept in touch by letter writing and the telephone.  They had communication within the families that does not happen in our different world.  A chuckle came from the group when great-nephew Malcolm Stubbings suggested that Aunty would have to get on Facebook.  This brought a wry smile from the guest of honour.
We all wished Eunice continued good health.  The day was a lovely memory for everyone involved.
