DIANE BELL
– RESIDENT OF THE YEAR 2012
Diane Bell tearfully accepted the award for Resident of the Year, thanking us for noticing and acknowledging her efforts.  Truthfully it is us, the Dayboro community, who should be thanking her.
It is the efforts of people like Diane Bell that so enrich this community.
In the beginning it was the Dayboro Kindy that was enriched by the volunteer efforts of Diane Bell – when her children attended there.  Later the list included Dayboro Scouts, Dayboro Show Society, Dayboro Pony Club, Dayboro Community Catering, Dayboro Cow Horse Club and many more.
Diane, together with husband Burn, helped to make the Dayboro Scouting movement and its facilities into the wonderful group that it is today.  I’m sure they are proud to look back on this as they see the youngsters today learning new skills and enjoying their joey/cubs/scouts experiences as we see them participating in the ANZAC March, Dayboro Day Parade and assisting at other local events.
More recent achievements include the formation of the Dayboro Cow Horse Club and helping to get the new rodeo arena fence finished in time for this year’s Rodeo.
Diane’s association with the Dayboro Pony Club goes back many years and includes over 14 years in the role of Secretary.  She is also a Level C Instructor for the club, which sees her out there every muster (training) day instructing the young riders.  A qualified instructor has to be present and take the lessons for the muster to proceed.  Often Diane was the only qualified person available, so it is thanks, in no small part, to her efforts and dedication that many young riders  owe their Pony Club experience.
Remember the  riding demonstration that the Pony Club put on for the Dayboro Show?  . . . The horses and their riders “dancing” to the music?  Well that was just part of what Diane Bell does wearing 2 hats at show time i.e. Pony Club and Show Society.  She organises the Pony Club events at the Dayboro Show including getting judges, stewards etc.  You’ll see her during the show walking back and forth ensuring that everything is going okay – that’s after setting up of the gear, both Pony Club and Show Jumping – and before packing it all up again at the end of each day!!  As Grounds Coordinator for the Show Society since 2001, this work is in addition to ensuring that everything is clean and needed repairs undertaken in readiness, not just for the show, but for all hirings of the grounds and/or buildings throughout the year . . . . Oh!  And taking the bookings too!!
All this and also being prepared to rearrange her schedule to make herself available to assist with catering efforts on ANZAC Day, Dayboro Day, and Dayboro Show as well as for funerals, trail rides and any other catering where home baking is required.  Diane works away in the background, not seeking the limelight.
Without the selfless effort of people like Diane Bell, this community would be so much poorer.

OLD MILL VETERINARY SURGERY
BUSINESS RECOGNITION AWARD for 2012
In just 6 years The Old Mill Veterinary Surgery has secured a place in the hearts of many residents for the dedicated and caring manner in which they treat their beloved pets.
It is a local business, run by locals – with Slade Walker and wife Annika being well-travelled locals.  Slade grew up in Dayboro then went out into the big, wide world, gaining impressive Veterinary credentials, then returning ‘home’ to Dayboro to set up his own practice.  He was later joined by Annika, who he married in 2009, and their son, Orian was born in April 2011.  Annika did further studies after her arrival, to gain even more credentials in the Veterinary field.
The “Northside Avarian and Exotics” banner – offering expert care for reptiles, pet birds and pocket pets – was added in 2011.
Their fresh attitude and genuine interest in, and love of, animals  is apparent to all.  Right from the beginning customers have been impressed with their natural affinity with both customers and their pets.
Some clients don’t live in the area, but make the trek here because they know that the dedicated team at Old Mill Veterinary Surgery will do their very best with the treatment of their animals.
Preparedness to respond to an emergency call, listening to the concerns of the animals’ owners and working with them to achieve successful outcomes, treating customers like a member of the family . . . this is all is part of the exceptional service that they provide.
Injured wildlife is taken care of and their rescuers kept up to date with the animal’s progress – all at no charge.
The Old Mill Veterinary Surgery continues to grow and expand its range of services, now offering a “One stop” experience for your pets needs.  Stay tuned for what it is come in the future!!  We will, no doubt, find out about this in due course as Slade and Annika continue to keep Dayboro residents informed on news from their practice as well as informative articles on topics relating to our pets.
To the team at Old Mill Veterinary Surgery, congratulations on receiving this award.

HARRY THOMSON
YOUNG ACHIEVER for 2012
Harry humbly attributed his achievements to the parenting he received.  Given that proud mum, Kath, is heavily involved with the Dayboro Scouts its obviously an actively in which they share their enjoyment.  Harry didn’t start in the scouting movement until he was 15, so has achieved a lot in just 3 years.
Harry Thomson featured on the front cover of our April edition, as “Dayboro’s newest Queens Scout”.  The work required to achieve this badge is quite substantial.
As part of his requirements towards achieving the Queens Scout Badge – Venturers highest award – Harry volunteered his time each week to assist with supervision and running of the program for Cub Scouts, but his commitment to this activity has continued beyond that.  He is discovering early on the enjoyment of selflessly helping others.
In the lead-up to our ANZAC Day Service Harry spends many hours practicing on the bugle to ensure that his performance is of a high standard as he wants to honours the ANZAC tradition with the deference it deserves.
Congratulations Harry.  Well done and keep up the good work.
