Over the weekend of 1-3 April the Dayboro Memorial Showgrounds hosted a very different weekend.
The Dances With Dogs Club Qld including 35 handlers and their dogs held a seminar with top English trainers Kath Hardman and Karen Sykes. Kath and Karen are known and respected around the world as highly successful trainers, handlers and judges; both have won and placed at Crufts in the UK as well as at World Championships.
Dances With Dogs is Australia’s newest dog sport and involves dogs and handlers doing heelwork and tricks to a choreographed piece of music. The handler dresses to the theme of the music but the dog may only wear a fancy collar or bow tie. No dogs dressed in tutus are allowed in this sport! The dogs are always treated with respect.
On the Friday night the Club held a Cabaret with 20 dogs and handlers performing their routines – from “Batman” to “Night Fever”. The Dayboro Show Society President and Committee were guests for the evening and thoroughly enjoyed the very unusual show.
On the Saturday and Sunday the handlers were trained and coached by the overseas visitors and enjoyed delicious home made meals provided by the Ladies Auxiliary.
Although the weather was wet many of the dog handlers camped at the Showgrounds in tents and caravans. Others stayed in nearby accommodation.
An enjoyable weekend for all – dogs and humans alike!
Dances With Dogs will return to the Dayboro Memorial Showgrounds for competitions to be held over the weekend of 19th/20th November. Members of the local community will be most welcome to come along and enjoy this event.
