July2014_Old Mill takes a tough stand on strays
There are many statistics thrown around regarding the sad fate of unwanted litters of puppies and kittens each year, and we often feel that there is nothing that we can do to change these figures. Now, the Old Mill Animal Hospital is helping owners to help their pets, by making desexing more affordable than ever before.
From now until the end of August, the Old Mill team is offering 20% off all cat and dog desexing procedures, as well as 20% off microchipping services. Whilst this offer obviously puts the procedures at well below cost price, the Old Mill team say they are proud to have joined forces with the RSPCA to make a tough stand against unnecessary litters and the growing population of stray dogs and cats in the Dayboro area.
“We have seen a steady increase in desexing bookings coming in since we launched the initiative and I hope that we will be able to make a difference in our community”, said Dr Annika Oksa Walker. People who may have several pets, or have been saving up for the procedure can now take full advantage of this offer. All pets desexed during this special promotion will receive the same great level of care provided by the Old Mill team, from comfy beds in temperature controlled wards, to the safest anaesthetic drugs and pain relief.
Desexing (also known as neutering, spaying or castrating) has fantastic benefits for animals and owners alike, with decreased risk of some cancers, lesser tendency for aggression and other unwanted behaviours, such as urinating in the house. There is obviously no chance of unwanted pregnancies or uterine infections after desexing a female pet. Dr Annika also revealed that a huge majority of pets they see for Motor Vehicle accidents are un-desexed pets looking for a mate.
Whilst there are some outdated old wives’ tales about the side-effects of desexing, the benefits of the procedure far outweigh any risks or rumours. Contrary to a popular myth, desexing itself does not make your pet fat, but may slow down the metabolism. This can be avoided by swapping to a specific ‘neutered’ diet, or simply feeding a bit less. Desexing also does not alter your pet’s innate temperament or character. If testicular appearance is particularly important to the male in your life, lifelike silicone implants can replace testicles at the time of castration.
For less than $100, your cat can be castrated at the Old Mill Animal Hospital, and just for taking part in the community initiative, you will receive an entry in the draw to win a pet-friendly holiday at the Sunshine Coast, or some much-needed fuel vouchers.
