Cost of Living Forum
On 11th June I hosted a Cost of Living Forum to assist locals in understanding how to best deal with cost of living pressures and what resources are available. I was joined on the night by guest speakers The Hon. Mark McArdle Minister for Energy and Water Supply, MyBudget representative Bryony Bishop and Westpac Bank manager Shaun Hosking. The information the panellists provided was well considered and very informative. Many people in attendance took the opportunity to ask questions of the Minister, whose portfolio of Energy and Water Supply was of great interest to many people on a tight budget. I also launched a new website www.budgetassistpinerivers.com.auto help locals tackle cost of living pressures.
Hoon Watch
Hoon Watch is an initiative I have been working on for some time and I was pleased to be able to officially launch it in late May with the assistance of The Hon. Jack Dempsey, Minister for Police and Community Safety. ‘Hooning’ is dangerous driving behaviour including street racing and burnouts that puts lives at risk. It is important to recognise the difference between hooning and genuine car enthusiasts. In contrast to hoons, car enthusiasts, like us all, want safer roads for everybody and have been in consultation with me regularly as well as attending the Hoon Watch Launch. If you witness any hooning behaviours on our streets you can report it to the hoon hotline on 13 HOON (13 4666) or to your local police station. You can also download the Hoonwatch Reporting Form from www.seathholswich.com
Justices of the Peace Recognition and Professional Development Day
On 13th June in collaboration with the Department of Justice I hosted a day of professional development and recognition for Justices of the Peace and Commissioners for Declarations in our area which was well attended by around 170 people. For the morning session I was joined by The Hon. Jarrod Bleijie, Attorney General and Minister for Justice, where we presented long serving JP’s with awards recognising 25, 40 and 60 years of service. Following this, those in attendance participated in a professional development session aimed at providing updated information and honing the skills of the JP’s in our community.
BrisBricks
The BrisBricks Lego expo recently visited the Pine Rivers region and as well as providing a fantastic day out for Lego fans young and old provided a great boost to the local economy. With over 6700 attendees over the course of the two day event, it was a resounding success. Exhibitors and attendees alike travelled from all around to participate in this family friendly event. It was also fantastic to be able to hold a special session for autistic children and their carers. This session was also attended by The Hon. Tracy Davis, Minister for Communities, Child Safety and Disability Services. Entry for children with autism and their carers was provided free of charge courtesy of myself and The Hon Peter Dutton MP, Federal Member for Dickson. I look forward to seeing BrisBricks return in 2014.
