July2012_OLD MILL VET SURGERY PET OF THE MONTH
Observant owners save Tess’s life
Meet Tess, a 10 year old Australian Kelpie who owes her life to her very observant ‘parents’.
Owners Di and Bernie found Tess to be doing some out-of-character things and licking her back end, so whisked her into the Old Mill Vet Surgery for checking. Luckily they did, as Tess had an infected uterus, known as Pyometra, and needed to be rushed into surgery. The Old Mill Vet team immediately treated her with anti-biotics and fluid therapy to stabilise her body which was battling the nasty infection. Dr Annika then performed surgery to remove the infected uterus and assess the state of the abdominal cavity.
Once Dr Annika was satisfied with Tess’s internal health, she stitched her closed and Tess remained on fluid therapy in her recovery bed. With a very fashionable ‘bucket collar’ in place, Tess was able to go home that evening, with pain relief and a course of antibiotics.
Pyometra is a condition we see a couple of times a year, and occurs in entire (not desexed) female dogs and cats. Older dogs have a much higher risk of developing Pyometra and the only way to guard against the painful infection is to spay young pets. Tess has made a full recovery and Dr Annika was happy with her progress when she returned for her complimentary check up recently.
