I’m thinking, “Oh! What will I write about for this section,” when in comes this email about switching to photoelectric smoke alarms.
I think fire is foremost in our minds at the moment so we’ll fit this late arrival in here to ensure you get this information as soon as possible:
STOP PRESS:
Switch to Photoelectric smoke alarms
Carolyn Male MP, State Member for Pine Rivers, recently asked a Question on Notice of the Minister for Emergency Services, the Hon Neil Roberts about the importance of smoke alarms.
Carolyn Male MP said that the Minister informed her that the Queensland Fire and Rescue Service (QFRS) recommends that homeowners switch when possible to Photoelectric smoke alarms.
"Photoelectric smoke alarms are more effective across a wider range of fires, particularly slow burning and smouldering fires," Carolyn Male MP said.
"QFRS recommends people supplement their existing alarms with a photoelectric type, and change their current smoke alarms to photoelectric as they fall due for replacement."
"Photoelectric smoke alarms are also less prone to nuisance alarms and therefore less likely to be disabled to stop announcing unwanted alarms and they do not contain radioactive material."
"I would also like to take this opportunity to remind householders of the free Safehome program, through which local firefighters visit residences and conduct a fire and general home safety audit. A check of smoke alarms is included in the visit. Bookings can be made via the QFRS website at www.fire.qld.gov.au or by ringing the Smart Services Queensland call centre on 1300 369 003."
