Feb2013_NETWORK TOPIC

Hi Folks!  I’m totally spent after playing catch-up to get this edition finished – with losing power and phone services!  There was much enjoyment during the enforced down-time though – playing cards and chatting with stranded relatives.  Night didn’t deter us as we played on using candle-light!
Thank you to Carmel Bond of the Dayboro District Historical Society (DDHS) for this interesting information (below) relating to the construction of the first bridge in Williams Street, Dayboro – a far cry from the costs associated with the current bridge which was officially opened on Saturday 1st December 2012.  (Pardon the pun – but – my word there has certainly been a lot of water pass under the bridge since then!!)
Doreen.

OPENING NEW WILLIAMS STREET BRIDGE
Saturday 1st December 2012
August 1934:  It was agreed to build a concrete culvert in Dayboro at a cost of £600 ($1200) to be raised by a subsidised loan from the Treasury.
Sept 1934:  A deputation waited on the assistant Treasurer to secure the subsidised loan
1 Nov 1934:  Subsidised loan of £600 ($1200) approved by the Governor in Council
Jan 1935:  The tender of Keith Morris for £524. 9.10 ($1048.99) was accepted
March 1935:  An additional advance of £60 ($120.00) was made to the Pine Shire Council on the loan-subsidy basis to complete the concrete culvert in the township of Dayboro.
During the construction of the culvert traffic was diverted around the bottom side of the culvert.  The awning post of the shop had to be removed and the awning stayed so traffic could go around underneath the awning.
