Feb2012_CLEAN UP VOLUNTEER ARMY SOUGHT

~ Clean Up Australia Day March 4th, 2012 ~
Moreton Bay Regional Council is again encouraging residents to pull on a pair of gloves, lace up the sneakers and help clean up Australia’s backyard on Sunday, March 4.
Mayor Allan Sutherland said Clean Up Australia Day was an important day that required a community effort to remove litter and rubbish from the Moreton Bay region.
“We’re seeking an army of volunteers to help us scour the surrounds of our roads, parks, lakes and beaches to give our local environment a boost by helping to reduce rubbish washing down our waterways and out to sea,” Mayor Sutherland said.
"The clean up sites will have designated start and finish times, with most commencing in the morning and finishing up with a barbeque lunch.
“Council will also be playing a role in the clean up effort, providing assistance to registered site coordinators with clean up kits and the collection of rubbish.”
Mayor Sutherland said volunteers taking part in the clean up at any location should be mindful of their safety first.
“Make sure you are wearing sturdy, enclosed footwear, long-sleeved shirts and long trousers, sunscreen, mosquito repellent, a hat, sunglasses and your gardening gloves,” the Mayor said.
Sites are registered through the Clean Up Australia Day website at http://www.cleanup.org.au/
Volunteers seeking to help can search for their closest clean up site on the same website or call 1800 282 329.
Residents can also find the Clean Up Australia Day site by visiting council’s website at: www.moretonbay.qld.gov.au/cleanup
In addition to the public clean up on Sunday, March 4, council is expecting more than 28 schools will band together and take part in this year’s school clean up on March 2.
Businesses wanting to take up the challenge can also help the cause by registering for their own designated clean up day on Tuesday, February 28.
