Australian Defence Medal
On Friday 18 April I had the pleasure of joining Squadron Leader Iain White in presenting seven local recipients with the Australian Defence Medal (ADM).  The ADM has been established to recognize serving and former Australian Defence Force (ADF) Regular and Reserve personnel who have demonstrated their commitment and contribution to the nation by serving for at least four years, or, completion of their initial term of engagement, whichever is the lesser.  The application forms for the ADM can be obtained by calling the DHA on 1800 1110321 or can be downloaded from www.defence.gov.au/dpe/dpe_site/honours_awards/resources/forms/forms/htm

National Volunteer Week
National Volunteer Week will be held from 12-18 May and aims to celebrate volunteering around Australia.  Statistics show that more than 5.4 million Australian’s over 18 years of age do some voluntary work annually contributing over 713 million hours.  They are the people we aim to recognize during National Volunteer Week.  The National Volunteer Week web site features resources for volunteers and voluntary groups including tips on promoting their organisation, a list of fast facts, a downloadable certificate of appreciation and a register of activities.  The web site is www.volunteeringaustralia.org/NVW.

National Families Week
National Families Week is being celebrated between 11-17 May.  The central aim of National Families Week 2008 is to encourage all Australians to do practical things to more effectively balance work and family responsibilities.  The slogan is:  “Work and Family – Getting the balance right”.  A calendar of local public events is posted on the Families Australia website www.familiesaustralia.org.au/familiesweek/index.htm.

The Little Black Book of Scams
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) is pleased to announce the release of a brand new edition of its popular consumer publication, The little black book of scams.  This book highlights a variety of popular scams that regularly target Australian consumers and small business in areas such as fake lotteries, internet shopping, mobile phones, online banking, employment and investment opportunities.  It also offers consumers tips on how to protect themselves from scams.  To obtain your copy contact the ACCC  Infocentre on 1300 302 502.
