Dec2013_RSL NEWS from Dayboro Chapter
Bray Park – Strathpine RSL Sub Branch
For those people who are not aware of the background of the Dayboro RSL, it was originally formed in 1926 with the assistance of Mr Frederick Nethersole who served in WW1 with the 3rd Pioneers. Some years after the war he settled in Armstrong Creek and eventually formed the then Dayboro Branch of the R.S.S.A.I.L.A.
Unfortunately, as time passed, membership within the RSL dwindled, resulting in it having to reluctantly cease operating with its doors closing in 1943 just after the death of its founding member.
However, the RSL has since reformed (in 2011) as a chapter under the mentorship of Bray Park-Strathpine RSL Sub Branch and currently has an active membership of 30 ex and current serving ADF personnel with the eldest being a WW2 veteran aged 95.
Like many small chapters and branches throughout the Nation, the Chapter relies heavily on the sale of memorabilia on Anzac and Remembrance Days and as a consequence the bank balance is quite meager compared with the larger RSLs throughout the State.
Notwithstanding the above, Dayboro has come to the fore by making donations to various community organizations and in particular, the most recent being a sum of $1,000.00 towards the Dayboro Police Charity Trivia Night. The proceeds of which are used in providing support to the Districts youth and various community projects.
Our recent donation presented by Dayboro RSL’s oldest member Charles Ellison and president Alex McMillan to SGT Ken Robinson and Constable Paul Waples.
The Chapter holds free sausage sizzle’s twice yearly on the Saturday before Anzac and Remembrance Days as a way of saying thank you to the Dayboro Community for their support and generosity throughout the year.
The Dayboro Chapter may be small but the members are committed to providing day to day advocacy, representational support and assistance to all veterans, ex-service men and women regardless of their membership in the League. We also provide a means for members to enjoy camaraderie and mateship and are determined to continue supporting the local community within the district.
