Dec2011_Dogs have their day in Dayboro

Thirty dogs, from backyard crossbreeds to obedience champs, converged on Dayboro last weekend for their "last dance" of the year.
Recognised as an official Australian dog sport just two years ago, Dances with Dogs (DWD) enables handlers and their dogs to demonstrate a skilful, choreographed routine, performed to music.
"Audiences and competitors alike enjoy the varied routines, music and creativity displayed by handlers and their dogs – both of whom obviously really enjoy what they are doing, says DWD Queensland club president, Gay Westmore.

The sport opens dogs’ minds to learning and the results are spectacular.
Dogs back up, weave, spin and jump – all in time to the beat!
Dayboro Memorial Grounds hall was the venue for the final of 2011.
Competitions included freestyle and heelwork to music, as well as a rookies class for beginners.  Sunday’s Rookies class was a festival of Christmas, with lots of short routines to Christmas music – with handlers in Christmas attire and their dogs wearing appropriate neck adornments.
On Saturday evening November 19, Pine Rivers Dog Obedience Club hosted a competition while on Sunday the competition was run by the Dances with Dogs Club, Queensland. Sunday also saw the presentation of title trophies for 2011.  Annswitch Canines donated a total of 55 title trophies for the year.
Coral Pethers and Trevor Telford presented the TCh Jaimon Kashmere UD Memorial Trophy, awarded for championship titles in both Freestyle and Heelwork to Music to Angie Burke and her Malinois, Inka.
In 2012, there will be DWD competitions held at a variety of venues throughout south-east Queensland, including Toowoomba, Caboolture, Birkdale, Chermside, Woongoolba, the Gold Coast, Dayboro and the Ekka and the organisation is always looking for more venues. Training is held at several venues, including Birkdale, Yatala, Chermside, Strathpine, Seventeen Mile Rocks and Greenbank.  For further information contact the Dances with Dogs Club via email at dwdcq@live.com.au or visit http://www.danceswithdogsaustralia.com/queensland.html
