Dec2011_DAYBORO GALLERY NEWS
Built in 1946 as a Plumbers shop The Dayboro Community Gallery looks a little different these days. Severely damaged by flood waters in January it has changed even more.
Many volunteers worked tirelessly over many weeks to get the gallery back in ship shape order. Internal walls have been replaced, external panels replaced, considerable painting done, wiring replaced and lighting upgraded.
Many volunteers worked tirelessly over many weeks to get the gallery back in ship shape order. Internal walls have been replaced, external panels replaced, considerable painting done, wiring replaced and lighting upgraded.
President Warren Watson is pleased with the results but says there is still a lot of work to be done. The workroom is about to have a new ceiling and further lighting installed. With the new internal walls it does provide increased display space to cater for the 35 members’ works of art. With new members and a continual changing of the display there is something different every visit to the gallery. Apart from oils and watercolours there is a large display of multimedia work and photographic images accompanied by many smaller pieces which make ideal gifts for the Christmas season.
DECEMBER ARTIST OF THE MONTH
MICHAEL FOREMAN
Michael is a Dayboro photographer with his exhibition aptly named ‘Lady in Red’ – a collection of black and white pieces incorporating stunning figures with a single element of red.
The introduction of spot-colour was an inspiration that came from his early darkroom days when he’d develop his own films and prints.

‘I’ve always been fascinated with the idea of adding small but intense portions of colour to focal points within a photo. It was the first thing I learned how to do after developing my own black and white prints in 1990. Hand-colouring has been my regular thing since ’95. I believe it returns a new kind of energy to black and white prints, bringing a sense of style along with it.’
Michael has been a photography facilitator at TAFE for over sixteen years. His work has appeared in many magazines and newspapers, as well as calendars and on-line web-pages. He recently described his creations to a class of students.
“Black and white photography forces the viewer to study line and shape. With a little of the right colour in the right place it’s just perfect.”
He added, “As I wanted the cleanest possible look in this collection, I couldn’t use models that had tattoos or tan lines. Aside from the colour added to it, these ladies are as natural as you can get.”
When asked about the intriguing method of signing these pieces with sealing wax, he replied, “Wax hasn’t been used in a very long time, has it? My grandmother used to use it for official railway documents. She’d press the molten liquid with a copper stamp, leaving behind a hardened three dimensional insignia. I had a copper stamp made up ten years ago and I think signing the pieces this way may seem a little old-school to some, but it’s very personal and organic to me.”
Michael’s work is on display at the Dayboro Art Gallery on the corner of Williams Street and Mt Mee Rd throughout the month of December.
