Dec2010 SINGERS GO HEAD TO HEAD
It was a war of voices when local singers Lisa Hobbs and Michael Forman took to the stage in the King Street Players (KSP), Burpengary variety show late last month. The couple were keen to work together again after they met in the successful Dayboro Player’s production, “Outback!”
“We did a tiny duet in ‘Outback’,” says Lisa, “and Michael did a short version of “Fat Bottomed Girls”, but it wasn’t until afterwards when we thought to ourselves, hey, we could do something longer than just a few bars.”
Michael adds, “I’ve always wanted to do a big theatrical duet, but I never found anyone with a voice big enough. After “Outback!” was over, I asked Lisa to try out the tune ‘I’d lie for you and that’s the truth’ and I was amazed with her voice. The KSP audience absolutely loved the six and a half minute ride that was our little piece of rock-opera!”
The King Street Players have been actively promoting amateur acts since 1983. In October, they put a call out to all performers, those who would like the chance to take to the stage with their own favourite song or skit.
“I’ve done two musicals with them before,” says Michael, “playing character roles and singing when the script called for it, but this was the first time I got to choose what I could sing, so I jumped at the chance.”
Lisa, one of our ambos, is not a stranger to the KSP venue either. Her parents were an integral part of the venue’s early development.
“Dad built the stage and the sound box when I was just a teenager,” says Lisa, “Now I’ve performed on his stage. I even got to drag out the nun’s habit I used in “Outback!”, for a solo. I think the crowd was delighted with it.”
Back at home, The Dayboro Players are already making preparations for next year’s show, planned to open in early September. With any luck, Lisa and Michael will return and give Dayboro another dose of their musical merriment. Keep a look out in the Grapevine for further details.
