Dec12_The Dayboro Grapevine – 20 Years On

“The Dayboro Grapevine” completed its 20th year in July of this year.  The Dayboro Regional Network was the brainchild of Pine Rivers Mayor Rob Akers and DPI Local Representative Cathy Todd and actually began a year earlier in 1991.
I (Edith Fogg)  was approached to see if I would take the chair if they held a Public Meeting to see if they could form a group which would bring country and town closer together, by circulating information throughout the community.  I agreed and the meeting was well attended.
We began work in the Pine Rivers Shire Council Office and manned the office there Saturday afternoon and all day Sunday, operating as an Information Office.  But it was still difficult to get information out of Dayboro township, so Joanne Hohns, Janelle Davies, Rosslyn Herron and Glennis Williams and I decided to look at starting a paper and we enlisted the help of Roger Bannerman of the Samford Village Pump in order to set it up.  We compiled the paper in several places over the years and even worked at the local Police Station when Karen McDougall (wife of the Local Policeman) was a member.  Dave McDougall wrote the first Police article about the Drug Raid in March of 1993, and most editions up to the present day, have a Police column included.
After starting the newspaper we had a slight change to the name for our group.  During the process of becoming an Incorporated Association – it changed to Dayboro Regional Information Network Incorporated as the name had to reflect what we did i.e. disseminate information.
The point of writing this article is to look back at some of the history of the paper and the advertisers who have supported us over all of the 20 years we have been operating.  Community Representatives in the first edition were Joe Bradley (Councillor),  Margaret Woodgate MLA,  and Graeme Ashworth (Qld Liberal).
North Pine Printing have been printing the paper from the outset – 20 years on.  While other publications have changed formats and printers, we have stayed with the charter we began with, publish information which the community wants circulated and stay local.  North Pine Printing’s origins was a shed at Samsonvale.  (Refer May 2012 edition for their story.)
Advertisers who appeared in the First Edition in July 1992 and still appear today are AMP Peter Lake, Dayboro Plumbing and Drainage Service, Keith E Davies and North Pine Printing.
In the second edition in September were Bowlak Bobcat (Glen Lake), Day Clippers (Frances Henderson) and also Gill Tanks – who ceased advertising with us last year.  Alpine Electrical joined for the Third Edition, in December 1992.
There were many businesses such as the Hotel, Local Sausageman, all sorts of Bobcat and Tippers, Carpet Cleaners and Nurseries.  In the second Edition there were advertisements from names recognized further afield i.e. Michael Lavarch (Federal Member) and Bruce Flegg (Liberal Candidate for Dixon).  There was also an article on Deer Farming by Maureen Pickstone and they still have the Lyell Deer Farm at Foggs Road and advertise from time to time.  Our front page article for the first edition was “Dairy Deliberations” by Pat Rowley and inside were a range of articles including a recipe for making your own soap.
History is a chronicle of the day to day happenings within the community.  When the Samsonvale Rural Fire Brigade wanted to look at what had happened over the years, Paul and Sue Crompton went through the articles from the Dayboro Grapevine.  This paper represents 20 years of History within Dayboro and the surrounding Districts.  Many of you will have written articles and advertised with us over the last 20 years.  We are very grateful for this, as the paper would not exist without your input and the support of our advertisers.
We began with a 20 page Publication and hand drawn illustrations.  Articles were glued onto pages at the Layout and photocopied to see that they were straight (mostly) before the paper was printed.  Now our editions are usually between 40 and 48 pages each month (excluding January), expertly done on the latest computer equipment by Editor, Doreen Spillman.
Many local volunteers have assisted with the compilation over the 20 years and we are always in need of interested people who have the time to assist.
