Bushrangers launch Urban Country Music Festival with a bang
Gun-toting bushrangers set off celebrations with a bang at the official launch of the 2009 QUT Urban Country Music Festival (May 1 to May 4) in Caboolture recently.
Mayor Allan Sutherland was opening the festival launch when he was interrupted by the armed Ned Kelly gang, which held up the hotel at Caboolture Historical Village ending in an old-fashioned shoot out. Police threw the gang behind bars soon after and the festivities continued.
Cr Sutherland said the 2009 QUT Urban Country Music Festival – proudly presented by Moreton Bay Regional Council – is expected to attract more than 35,000 day visitors and will feature over 500 country music artists across 11 stages as well as four days filled with free events.
“The Urban Country Music Festival is now in its sixth year and continues to get bigger and better,” he said.
“On the May long weekend, the streets of Caboolture will be filled with stacks of free country music concerts and popular events and on Saturday May 2, some of the biggest names in country music like Lee Kernaghan and John Williamson will be back in town for our ticketed main concert.”
Deputy Mayor Greg Chippendale (Division 3) announced talented singer songwriter Sinead Burgess of Beachmere, as the ambassador for this year’s festival.
“Sinead’s star continues to rise and it’s fantastic to have a local performer of this high calibre play such an important role in promoting our festival,” Cr Chippendale said.
Eighteen-year-old Burgess will perform at the main concert at Caboolture Showgrounds along with Lee Kernaghan, John Williamson, Adam Harvey, Jonah’s Road, Travis Collins and the 2009 Toyota Star Maker winner Liam Brew on May 2.
A new feature this year will be shows by horse whisperer Guy McLean on the Saturday and Sunday.
The Urban Country Music Festival is benefiting from a $25,000 investment under the Queensland Events Regional Development Program (QERDP), a State Government initiative designed to take unique and creative regional events to their full potential.
Standard tickets to the festival’s Main Concert are available through the festival’s website at www.urbancountry.com.au or Ticketek (13 28 49 and www.ticketek.com.au ), Council’s customer service centres,Caboolture RSL, Caboolture Sports Club, North Leagues and Services Club Kallangur and Redcliffe RSL Club.
