Aug2014_SO WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING
by Ryle Winn
To date, I haven’t delved into fiction writing – although some less-than-gracious souls have suggested that all my books are fiction anyway. Huh!
But, to my mind, real stories are easier to write because you know the characters and what they do, and will do.
Fiction is harder to sell, unless you’re Robert Barrett. If you don’t know his writing its biff, bang, crack ‘em over the scone stuff. – then he gets serious. Robert wrote twenty or more books and died 2 years ago. He has left a hole in the market and I might have a go at filling it … perhaps, if I’m good enough. You might wonder where I’m going with this. I’ll tell you.
Remember last month when Karyn found me asleep in front of my computer and I told a pack of lies and got caught out. Right. That didn’t happen this month. Something else did.
Imagine this. I’m writing this scene about a pub brawl and its not going right. The big bloke is giving the little bloke a thrashing and the barman steps in and throws a punch and puts the big bloke off balance. Next thing, ten other drinkers decide it might be fun too. Biff McLeod, my lead character, enters the brawl too and things turn really ugly. His sidekick, Anika gives a display with her incredible kick boxing. Eventually they sort out the mess.
I’ve got the scenario in my head but nothing else. Only one thing for it. I’ll act it out – one character then the other, then the other. Straight lefts, right crosses, haymakers, head locks, grunts, swearing. Kicks in the teeth.
‘Ryle, my God what is going on in there? It sounds like a bar brawl.’
She appears in the doorway, catching me in a boxing pose.
I say, ‘I thought you were pegging out the washing.’
‘What is going on? Who are you fighting? Are you alright?’
‘Course.’
She looked skeptical.
‘Have you taken your pills this morning?’
PS The title of the book is A Bit of Biff. All going well this will be the first of a series. Have a look on www.RMWINN.com Watch this space.
