Aug2014_DAYBORO GALLERY NEWS

Artist of the Month for August, Bruce Mercer.  Bruce Mercer is our current President and has been a long time member of the Gallery.  He reckons he started drawing with charcoal from his mum’s laundry copper, after wash day.  He went from there to studying Commercial Art at a Technical College!, and worked for companies like Allen and Stark in Queen Street, and McWhirters in Fortitude Valley!!

Some of you might be able to work out how old he is from these clues, but let me say he is just a little wise.  Bruce’s work is inspired by man-made structures, wildlife, nature, sunsets, light and shadows.  He works mainly with oil and acrylic paints, using a variety of mediums.  These include Pyrography, where he burns images into the material surface, usually wooden, and then layers acrylic paints and finishes, to complete the work.  The images can be very detailed and Bruce tries to reach a point where he “can walk into his subject”.  So for Bruce Mercer, art is about the journey and having no ultimate goal.  “If perfection is ever achieved then the journey might end,” it says in his bio.  Bruce truly deserves the title of President, because throughout his ‘a little wise’ life he may have been other things, but he has always been an artist.
