AUG2013_KOALA ACTION
Koala Action Pine Rivers Inc. would like to remind everyone that at this time of year koalas are on the move. Now is the time for male koalas to find a mate and for the young sub adults to find a home range of their own.
Due to the escalating decline of Australia’s native bush land habitat koalas have to come to ground in search of food, shelter and dispersal opportunities. It is at this time they are in danger of being struck by motor vehicles and attacked by domestic and wild dogs.
Please ensure when driving past parks, reserves and bushland to slow down. A koala hit by a motor vehicle travelling under 80 kph has a chance to survive some of the injuries sustained in such an altercation. Keeping dogs restrained at night allows koalas to move safely across the ground. Remember even a small bite can be life threatening. If you suspect a koala has been attacked by a dog/s please ring 0401 080 333. The sooner the koala gets medical care and an antibiotic injection the greater the chances of recovery from the bacterial infection stemming from the bite. If you see a koala on the ground something is wrong. It is better to have a rescuer capture the animal and organise for it to have a health check than to let it suffer.
