April 2010 . . MT MEE NEWS

By Ian Wells

The rain continues – thank goodness I’m not milking cows!  Remarkably, I did strrike a patch of dry bitumen on my way to Woodford the other day, the first I have seen for months. But it was wet when I came home an hour later.
The downside for those of us with lumpy blocks is that it hasn’t been possible to get the cattle up for routine maintenance. So the ticks and fly have been having an endless field day. The constant wet seems to have interfered with the transfer of “active” from  backrubbers to hide and this has encouraged the fly even more in our neck of the woods. Never mind, each day that passes is another day closer to familiar old man drought.
ANZAC Day
Please note that the dawn service at the Mt Mee Look-Out will begin at 6am this year – a little earlier than in the past. Once again, it will be organised by the remarkable Neil Eiby OAM, of the Woodford RSL Sub-branch – a former RSM of Duntroon Military College.
With the recent positive identification of wreckage on the sea floor off Moreton Island, the theme will be the hospital ship Centaur. It will be a bit special for Lynn Dickman of Bass Rd, who has a family connection with the dreadful loss of the ship. We will be asked to sing the navy hymn “Eternal Father, strong to save”, and the Australian and New Zealand anthems, so begin practising now!
The newly constructed memorial, together with the flagpole donated last year by Council, will be the focal point for this service.  As I write, other than for some minor finishing touches, the memorial is now completed as planned.  We do need fine weather for a day or two though to dry things out so that we can refinish the slate.
ANZAC Memorial Dedication
In preparation for ANZAC day, the memorial will be dedicated  by Father George of the Kilcoy Anglican Parish on Sunday 18th April at 1pm, in a brief ceremony.
Mountain residents and friends are very cordially invited to the dedication ceremony.
Both families connected with the two WW2 plaques rescued from under the school and refurbished for the memorial will be well represented. Remarkably, this event has led to a reunion that day of the descendants of the Brockhurst family – the first since they sold their holding next to the Community church and moved to Nambour prior to WW2.
We can guarantee that the dedication service will be brief and to the point.  Even better, it will be followed by the mandatory sticky bun and lukewarm cup of tea, so we ask for some indication of numbers. Note: Unless you have received a special invitation,  please bring your own chair.
Please call Neil or Pat Eiby on 5496 1457, or the writer on 5498 2104.
Mothers Day Luncheon and Fashion Parade
The Mt Mee Anglican Ladies Guild is running the annual Mothers Day luncheon and fashion parade in the Mt Mee Hall on Thursday May 6th from 10 am. There will be morning tea, lunch and the fashion parade featuring local models clad in the latest gear from “Fashionation”, Woodford’s own boutique.  The rumour that the Squire will “come out” on the catwalk in his favourite cheeky little black cocktail dress and big brass earrings has not been confirmed.
Admission is $15.00.  Please book with Joyce on 5498 2270 or Audrey on 5498 2248.
Other News
The Cleveland Symphony Orchestra’s concert is now behind us. It was very enjoyable, and the smiles on the faces of the audience bore witness to that. The next concert – the St Lucia Orchestra, is due on the 30th of May.
I’m pleased to relate that some further contributions have been made to the dog fund. We would like more though – make cheques out to “Mt Mee Cooperative Dog Fund” and forward to 361 Hausmann Rd. All donations will be receipted.
Finally, one of the Mountain’s patriarchs has celebrated (or consoled himself at) yet another birthday. Clem Ehrlich turned 85 on 29th March with a pub lunch. That gave the fish at least one day off!
