Moreton Bay Regional Council is urging cat owners to register their pets before the end of the cat registration fee free amnesty on June 30, 2010.
Lifestyle and Amenity spokesperson, Councillor David Dwyer, said council had announced a schedule of affordable registration costs to help pet owners comply with state government laws.
“Until recently, cat owners haven’t needed to register their pets, but Moreton Bay Regional Council is making the transition easier with our fee free registration amnesty in 2009/10, followed by a modest annual renewal of $25 for desexed felines,” Cr Dwyer said.
“Moreton Bay was among the local councils in South East Queensland to offer free registration for the first year of the state government’s cat legislation and has so far seen up to 7,500 animals enrolled on the register.
“It’s all part and parcel of responsible pet ownership and I thank those owners who’ve already done the right thing and registered their cat.”
Councillor Dwyer said a new schedule of registration charges would apply for owners and their pets. They include:
Annual renewal for desexed cat – $25, concession – $20
Annual renewal for entire cat – $40, concession – $32
First year cat registration – $20
First year dog registration – $20
Annual renewal desexed dog – $25, concession – $20
Annual renewal for entire dog – $80, concession – $60
New costs also apply for dogs which are declared by council as restricted, dangerous or menacing. These include:
Dangerous dog – $400 per year
Restricted dog – $200 per year
Menacing dog – $200 per year
Cr Dwyer said council had simplified individual animal registration for the holders of breeders’ permits in the region with a flat fee of $20.
“We’ve taken a user pays approach to the state’s requirements for animal registration, which will assist council to maintain its comprehensive animal management program for the benefit of the entire community,” Cr Dwyer said.
All first-year charges for pet registration apply from July 1, 2010, and renewals from October 1st, 2010.
