April 2010 . . CLEANING UP AUSTRALIA 2010 Report

Karen Gear was just going down the road to pick up a few things when she found a shopping trolley abandoned in long grass.
Karen was one of 15 members from Pine Rivers Uniting Church cleaning up Narangba Rd on Sunday.  Between them they collected eight bags of rubbish, three of recyclables, a shopping trolley, two truck batteries and the porthole from a boat!
What an eclectic haul!  Well done to this crew, and the many others who participated in this year’s CleanUp Australia Day.
One has to wonder about the people who dump these items in inappropriate places!!  Where is their sense of pride in their community.
Here’s a tip:  Make every day a CleanUp Day!!
Don’t just wait for the specific CleanUp Day initiative – pick up rubbish on any day.  For example, if you see a bottle lying on the footpath or the side of the road, pick it up and dispose of it appropriately!  This is much easier than dealing with the resulting many small pieces of glass that it could be by tomorrow – not to mention the risk of a child or animal getting a shard of glass in their foot!
So take a plastic bag with you when next you go walking around your neighbourhood.  Fill it up and get that “CleanUp Australia” day good feeling every time!!
