Apr2013_OLD MILL VET SURGERY PET OF THE MONTH

It never ceases to amaze us how many large animals make their way into Dr Annika Oksa Walker’s Small Animal clinic at the Old Mill Veterinary Surgery.  Thankfully they’re all only a few weeks old at best, so they don’t take up much room!
This week it was Sunshine, a three week old calf suffering from dehydration and diarrhoea after she was abandoned by her mother at only a few days old.  Sunshine was hooked up to intravenous fluids and tube fed an electrolyte replacement straight into her stomach.  She also had a course of antibiotics to assist her body to fight off any bacteria, as she didn’t receive colostrum from her mum.
Sunshine’s mother still isn’t very interested in caring for her calf, so Sunshine’s dedicated owners are bottle feeding her with a special calf formula.
