Apr2013_Great Dayboro Pet Day
a Barking Success!
The inaugural Great Dayboro Pet Day was a great success when it took over the Old Mill grounds on Sunday 17th March, in glorious sunny weather. With more than a dozen attractions for kids and families to participate in, guests were kept entertained for hours.
From the petting zoo, pony rides, jumping castle and puppy play pen, to the wildlife carers, fire engines and exotic chicken displays, there was plenty to see and do. Participants in the Clinic Tours were full of questions as they learned about theatre procedures, diagnostic imaging and were invited to get hands-on with the laboratory equipment.
Dr Slade Walker, principal veterinarian, said the real motivation for the day was to give back to the families in the community, for their ongoing support of the family business.
“As vets we see so many incredible animals during our day to day work, but it’s not often that kids can get up close and pat them. The Old Mill family wanted to share something special with the community, in a way that benefits local organisations long after the day is over.”
Dr Walker said the generous donation of almost $450 to the Dayboro State School P&C Association was just icing on the cake, after a day full of smiles and new experiences for the kids. The Rural Fire Brigade also took home over $250 from the successful sausage sizzle stand.
The much anticipated Best Dressed Pet awards went to a little Weimaraner dressed in a sleek white tutu dress and in the Exotic Pet category the winner was a turkey wearing a tuxedo and top hat. The competition attracted 17 entrants and each owner had put in a lot of effort.
Prior to the Great Dayboro Pet Day, local school children were offered the chance to win a brand new stunt bike by drawing a picture of their pet, or a pet they know. The winner of the major prize was Hannah Makings with a lifelike picture of her dog, Toby. All entries into the drawing contest will be displayed in the foyer of the Old Mill Vet for the next month.
We have included a few photos of the day here, but if you have photos of your own, we’d love you to share them with us at www.facebook.com/oldmillvet or email them to info@oldmillvet.com so we can upload them.
From all at Old Mill, thank you for supporting the day and with such a huge turnout, we will definitely be doing it all again next year!
