Apr12_ALLAN SUTHERLAND for Mayor

Let’s Finish the Job
Today I announced that I will be running for re-election as Mayor of the magnificent Moreton Bay Region.
This is a community that I love.  It is an organisation that I care for.  And it is a job that I pour my heart and soul into.
Over the coming weeks I will be sharing my positive vision for the future.
I will be talking with locals about what more we can do to make this community the best place to live, to call home, to run a business, to raise a family.
I have no doubt I have a contest on my hands and I do not for a moment take my job for granted.  Quite the opposite in fact.  But I will not let the good work of the last four years be torn up and trashed.  I am asking for one more term to finish the job.
We have come a long way in four years, bringing together three very distinct and diverse communities into one region.  One Council.  But there is so much more to be done.
Today, I say to the staff of council, my councillor colleagues and the 400 odd thousand residents who call this great place home:  Let’s finish the job.
The hard work and hard slog of amalgamating this super-council is all but done.  Now is the time to reap the reward for your effort.  Now is the time to make sure we flourish and grow as a strong and prosperous community.
I arrive at this decision after much deliberation.
In terms of our Moreton Bay Region, a quick review of the past four years shows it certainly has been an enormous journey so far.
It has been characterised by the completion of some exciting major construction projects, some horrific natural disasters, and a “get on with the job” mentality by all.
Throughout the years there have been many occasions when Moreton Bay Region’s community spirit has shone brightly.  It was there in the aftermath of January’s flash flood, and displayed during the many exciting and colourful community events, that celebrate the diversity of our region, such as the Woodford Folk Festival, Urban Country, Farm Fantastic, Pine Rivers Festival, Festival of Sails and the tremendous chaplaincy breakfasts that were so generously supported by our business community.
The fact that we have such an active and strong sense of community in the Moreton Bay Region makes it a great place to live and its one of the reasons I am so proud to be your Mayor.
One of the real highlights of the last four years has been the chance to meet and work with so many inspiring Moreton Bay Region locals—young and old, mums and dads, business owners and employees—who are passionate about where they live and want to make our region and its way of life even better.  Most are quiet achievers contributing greatly to their community with no fanfare or fuss.
Everyday we all play a role in helping to build our community, be it lending a hand to a neighbour, hopping behind the barbecue to help at a sports day, or just getting out and enjoying our region’s many facilities and services with friends and family.
To all Moreton Bay Region residents, I thank you for working with council to build a better community.
Just briefly I say this too:
To those people who wish to discredit me and my family I say—you better be ready for the fight of your life.  I will not stand for one moment longer and see you trash my reputation and the reputation of this community and its council.
We have worked too hard to allow you to take the community for a ride.  I will not let it happen.
I have worked in divided council before.  They just don’t work.  It is one thing to disagree with decisions and engage in healthy, constructive debate . . . and it is another matter altogether to divide, deceive and just not participate at all.
There is a lot to be said for a Council that works together and cooperates.  A Council free from the pettiness of party politics.
If the last year or so is any insight to the sort of skulduggery that we might see as part of an opponent’s bid for Mayor, residents should brace themselves for the most misleading and grubby political campaigns ever to be seen.
So while my opponents will be working hard to sling mud at me and the many achievements of this Council I intend to spend my time outlining my positive vision for the future.
I will be talking with locals to see what more needs to be done to build this community of ours.
I love this community, I love what we have achieved.  But I know there is more to be done.
And, with the support of the community, I will continue to serve as Mayor, for one more term to Finish the Job.
