American professor digs Moreton Bay turf

It seems the grass is greener in Moreton Bay – and it’s attracting attention from international turf experts.
Leading United States turf researcher Professor Al Turgeon visited some of the region’s sports fields and parks recently as part of a turf research tour hosted by the University of Queensland and the Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries.
During his tour of the region’s sports fields, Professor Turgeon will be paying particular attention to the grass, which has become renowned for being exceptionally well maintained by council.
Professor Turgeon’s local research will assist him in developing tertiary education programs in turfgrass science for the University of Queensland.
For more than 15 years, council crews have implemented an intensive turf maintenance regime involving regular soil testing, nutrient treatments, fertiliser and herbicide treatments.
Mayor Allan Sutherland said residents and sporting groups of Moreton Bay region enjoyed some of the best sports fields and parks in South East Queensland, due in part to council’s rigorous turf maintenance regime.
“Council has become a leading local government in turf maintenance and it is a fantastic achievement to be recognised by a respected scientist such as Professor Turgeon,” Cr Sutherland said.
“Council is committed to the maintenance and upkeep of our sporting fields as an essential service to the community.”
