Comfort Packs
In the first 3 months of this year alone the Domestic Violence Connect Helplines in Australia received 16,000 calls from families needing help.  More than 2000 women and children had to be moved out of their homes just to stay safe – that’s 75 families per week.  When a woman and her children leave, they often leave with nothing.  We regularly provide Comfort Packs to a Women’s Shelter within the Moreton Bay Region.

These packs contain practical care items that help bring comfort and relief to families in need.
Donations of full-size new toiletries (not samples) are always welcome.  For example – toothbrush with cover and toothpaste, soap and deodorant, shampoo and conditioner, moisturiser, hairbrush, tissues and sanitary items.  Items for kids packs include – toothbrush with cover and toothpaste, hairbrush, pencils, exercise or colouring book, small toys.

Recipe of the month:
Steph’s 5-cup Slice
(Great for lunchboxes and great for using up odds and ends in the pantry)
Ingredients:
* 5 cups of whatever cereal/dried fruit/nuts you have in the cupboard (see below)
100g butter
¼ cup honey (or rice malt syrup or maple syrup)
½ cup sugar (or dextrose or stevia)
* Cereals such as cornflakes, rice bubbles or muesli work well.  Try using up those crumbly bits of cereal at the bottom of the box the kids won’t eat, or the healthy fruit and nut bran cereal you bought but no-one liked.  Dried fruit like sultanas, chopped apricots, raisins, dried cranberries, chopped dates or prunes.  Chop nuts like walnuts, pecans, almonds, cashews, hazelnuts, macadamias or mixed nuts (omit nuts if sending slice to school though).  Desiccated or shredded coconut, sesame seeds, sunflower seeds or pepitas help to fill out the slice as well.

Method:
Place the 5 cups of cereal/dried fruit/nuts in a big bowl.
Melt the butter, honey and sugar together in small saucepan stirring until hot and bubbly.
Pour hot syrup into dry ingredients and stir it well to coat everything.
Press into a lined slice tin and pop in fridge to set.
Slice when cool.
