Interesting chap, Matthew. He was a publican, which was not in the 1st century CE someone who managed a pub, but rather a tax collector. (I have to be careful here in case I give Joe Hockey or Tim Nicholls ideas.) Tax collectors weren’t public servants, forget your helpful, friendly ATO call centre, they were private contractors who bid for the right to collect taxes. Typically, they would pay an upfront fee equivalent to the tax take which they expected for the year, have it paid back with interest by Rome at the end of the year, and collect much more, as much as they could rip off from the poor Jewish taxpayers during the year. So they were hated as spivs and collaborators.
Yet Jesus called him to be a disciple. And not so that he could continue in his nefarious ways. Jesus saw the person who Matthew wanted to be. Stuff those judgmental churchy types who only see the crook, said Jesus, I see who you can be by my grace.
Just sayin’ ……..
