DAYBORO DAY – 21st YEAR AND GOING STRONG
This huge event draws visitors from far and wide, including interstate, and not only contributes to the growing interest in our area as a tourist destination, but is also a major component of the annual Pine Rivers Festival.
This huge event draws visitors from far and wide, including interstate, and not only contributes to the growing interest in our area as a tourist destination, but is also a major component of the annual Pine Rivers Festival.
The weather was perfect, the range of market stalls and food stalls was outstanding, growing bigger every year and with the Antique and Collectibles Fair also growing in popularity, not one of the 10,000 or more visitors on the day would have left disappointed. Congratulations to the Dayboro Progress Association, the members of the organising committee, the community volunteers and groups and the award recipients, all of whom make the day such a success. Having only missed a handful of Dayboro Days in 21 years, I can say "Long Live Dayboro Day" and I look forward to Council continuing its long support for this great event.
COUNTRY SHOWTIME AGAIN
The Country Show has, for many years, been a part of the character of most rural communities and provides new and old residents alike the opportunity to savour a unique experience in the history of rural and semi-rural living. With Dayboro and Samford hosting their 2012 shows on the 6/7/8th July and 13/14/15th respectively, residents of our region and further afield are fortunate to have these two unique events so close at hand. In recognition of the importance of the annual Shows to the Region, Council is again providing $5,000.00 to assist each of these Show Societies in staging their events in addition to other in kind and financial assistance. I have also again arranged for a Council display/information stand to be provided and I look forward to many of you dropping by for a chat over these two weekends.
COUNCIL BUDGET
Council and its officers have been working their way through some thirteen workshops to prepare for the 2012/13 budget which the Mayor and I will have delivered on the 29th June after the closing date for this edition. The challenges of meeting the needs and expectations of the community in the face of reduced grants from the State over the last couple of years, and in the knowledge that many people are doing it tough, does not make the task any easier. Like so many of us in the community, all levels of government are having to pull their belts in, but despite this, your council remains in a strong financial position and I look forward to providing more budget details in next month’s column.
NEW WASTE SERVICE CONTRACT
Every few years, Council calls tenders for its kerbside waste collection services. On 1st July 2012 we will see a change in contractor with Transpacific Cleanaway commencing their new contract for the kerbside collections for both general waste and recyclable waste for all service areas of MBRC. For those properties which do have a waste service the collection day will remain the same, and existing bins will remain in use. New and replacement waste bins will have a red lid and a dark green body to meet new Australian Standards and recyclable waste bins will have information imprinted on the lid for what and what not to place in the bin.
COMMUNITY GROUPS SHARE GRANTS HANDOUT
At a recent meeting, Council approved grants totaling more than $300,000 to a range of community groups across the Region under its Community Assistance Grants Scheme. Division 11 groups successful in gaining funding included the Samford Green Street Sustainability Hub for a number of community workshops, the Garrawin Court, Clear Mountain Bushcare Group, the Samford Museum to complete concrete work to the entrance from John Scott Park, the Samford Playgroup for upgrading the area around the building they lease from the local RSL, and to the LIONS club of Samford to assist in conducting their District 2012 convention at the Showgrounds.
