May2012_The Ride to Conquer Cancer

The ride to conquer cancer was conceived to raise money for research into a cure for all types of cancer.
The funds raised go the Queensland Institute of Medical Research, which is one of the world’s leading research centres looking into ridding us of this insidious condition that claims so many lives young and old.
I just happened to catch a television ad for the ride and became curious, because I have never been involved directly in a charity fund raising event.  I have been pedalling all over the place for years in the UK, Europe and Australia and thought that a 200 km bike ride up to Wivenhoe was a reasonable challenge and a great way to embark upon something in life that has some meaning.
I have been living in Australia for just over nine years and have always been impressed by the number of groups raising money for one cause or another, but have never had the courage to get involved myself.  I suppose there comes a time in most peoples’ lives when the daily routine just doesn’t seem enough and we go searching for things that give us a more meaningful existence.
I have lost count of the number of people I have known over the years that have succumbed to cancer and it is frightening that those that it claims are of any age and it doesn’t matter how physically fit you are it might take you down.  Being in a research profession myself I know how difficult it can be to raise funds and all too often there is the need for charitable and benevolent donations to keep things going.
I live up at Ocean View and can be seen plodding slowly up the Mt Mee hill on my bike every now and then and have decided that raising money for this cause as part of trying to stay in shape seems like a good idea.
All riders commit to raising a minimum of $2,500 for the event and I am grateful for any donations of whatever value in support of my participation efforts.
The easiest and safest way for anyone to make a donation is through the official website created for the event and the following web link will take you to my page:

The ride takes place over two days and departs Brisbane on the 18th of August and returns on the 19th.  It should be quite a spectacle for anyone interested in seeing how many of us are joining in the event.                                                Jono.
