PHOTOGRAPH OF THE MONTH:  Building No. 14 on the Dayboro “The Town of Yesteryear” Historical Town Walk brochure is now known as the Dayboro Community Hall.
It was the second Orange Hall in the district, built on land owned by Thomas Strain, and was opened on 31st December 1908 with a concert and dance which continued until daylight.
“Brisbane Courier” 12th January 1909
“The opening of the new Orange Hall at Terror’s Creek with a concert and dance on December 31 was one of the most successful social events ever held in the district (writes a correspondent).  The large hall, which had been built to cope with the future expansion of this growing district, was taxed to its utmost to contain the large audience which assembled from this and the surrounding districts and numerous visitors from a distance.  The concert programme, which was large and varied, proved highly enjoyable.  Refreshments were served and a dance was then subsequently held, continuing until daylight.”
The first Orange Hall had been built near the corner of Laceys Creek and Mt. Pleasant Roads by the No. 8 Killyman True Blue Orange Lodge in the 1870s and had outlived its usefulness.
The new Orange Hall became the focal point for the community with all manner of entertainment being held there from balls to church fetes to children’s concerts to weddings to movies.  One of the movies shown on the Billboards in the c. 1917 photograph was “In the Midst of the Jungle” made in 1913, directed by Henry MacRae and starring Hobart Bosworth, Al Ernest Garcia, Lorraine Otto and Herbert Rawlinson.  The hall was also used for meetings of local organisations, political meetings and as a polling booth.
In October 1936 the Orange Hall was sold to the citizens of Dayboro for £200.  In November 1936 a Dayboro Public Hall and School of Arts Committee was formed with Mr. F.E. Long (Chairman), Mr. N.A. Hill (Secretary) and Mr. F.A. Kelly (Treasurer).  Other committee members were Mr. V. Williams, Cr. R.A. Cruice, Messrs. A. McKenzie Snr., C.D. Illingworth, J.H. Maher, C. Doyle, E.V. Kirby and W.M. Cook.  The hall was renovated and extended to footpath level and re-opened as the Dayboro Public Hall on 12th November 1937 with a Grand Opening Ball.
Trustees continued to conduct the business of the Hall until it was taken over by the Pine Rivers Shire Council in the 1980s and it has since that time been operated by a Hall Management Committee and is now known as the Dayboro Community Hall.
