Oct2011_JAPANESE COAST WATCHER

Earlier this year I wrote an article about the possibility of a Japanese Coast Watcher (Spotter) on Mt. Lawson in WW11, I received a call almost immediately from June Henderson (nee Hedge) who grew up on a farm at Samsonvale.
June recalled that during WW11 the family could see a small white square from their house which suddenly appeared up on Mt. Kobble, possibly a Tent.  After a couple of days the
local farmers banded together and climbed the Mountain to investigate.  June remembered the climb vividly as she was only a small girl and it was a very long and difficult climb.
On reaching the top, nothing was to be seen, the white square couldn’t be found.  When they returned home the mysterious white square had vanished and was not seen again .
Was it a Japanese Coast Watcher?  Was it the same one who the Army looked for twice over on Mt. Lawson, reporting shipping movements out on Moreton Bay?  I do not know.
I would still like to hear from anyone about the searches for a Japanese Coast Watcher during WW11.  Please contact me on 07- 3289 4646 or windyknoll1@bigpond.com
June was related to some of the first pioneering families at Samsonvale and started sharing her memories with us about when her Father had the Post Office and the Telephone Exchange at Samsonvale and how she used to work Shifts on the Exchange.  (People by the name of Clay had the Store). Tragically June passed away suddenly on August 12th before we could record all her Memories.
What we did record will be included in our next book in the series of Samford Reminiscences .
