COUNCILLORS COLUMN Dec08
by Cr Bob Millar
CHRISTMAS IS ALMOST UPON US
By the time this edition of the Grapevine is on the streets, we will be within a few weeks of yet another Christmas and I’m sure like me, you all wonder where the past 12 months have gone. There is also no doubt that the older we get the faster they come around. It has been another year of considerable achievement for our communities right across the region and one that has no doubt brought many challenges to all of us, not the least of which has been dealing with all of the aspects of the creation of our Moreton Bay Regional Council.
I look forward with enthusiasm to working with you all in 2009 to make our substantial part of the world an even better place in which to live. As this is the last edition of the Grapevine before Christmas, I would like to take the opportunity to wish you and your families a holy, enjoyable and safe festive season and a hope that the New Year is kind to you all. Despite this busy time of the year, I may see some of you at Swaggies Christmas or the Combined Churches’ carols, both of which I am pleased to continue to support to help defray their production costs.

DAYBORO SWIMMING POOL
The recently installed shade structure at the pool will provide a much needed relief from the summer sun, and I am pleased it has finally arrived after having been on my hit list for the last few years. I have already received positive feedback on this latest addition at the pool, which will no doubt contribute to further increases in patronage of this valuable community facility. The latest attendance figures indicate increased use of the pool complex and this is no doubt contributed to by Nicole’s good management of the complex. Our community’s increased focus on health and fitness have no doubt also led to this increase in patronage and some 3,700 people have availed themselves of the many swim programs and our unique little gymnasium since July. If you would like to join the growing number of happy patrons, give Nicole a call at the pool on 3425 1463.
ROADWORKS
I have recently approved funding for the bitumen sealing of James Road, Ocean View to improve access for the Ocean View Rural Fire Brigade, adjoining resident and telecommunication provider. Whilst Council officers are undertaking these works I have also requested them to seal the access road to the Rural Fire Brigade building.
SHAFT – SUPER HOLIDAY ACTIVITES FOR TEENAGERS
Pine Rivers District students Grade 8 – 12 who live or attend school in the Pine Rivers District can again participate in the vast range of holiday activities. The activities are subsidised by council making them more affordable and accessible for students. Bookings opened on 2nd December for activities from 12th to 23rd January 2009. For more information visit out website at www.moretonbay.qld.gov.au or you can phone 3480 6666.
GREEN AND CLEAN
Council have produced a fact sheet called Your Natural Cleaning Guide. This Guide gives safe and effective cleaning ideas using normal ingredients found in your home. Natural cleaning or ‘green cleaning’ is a way to clean your home with fewer cleaning products – producing less waste and reducing the need to use chemicals. If you would like a brochure please call 3480 6455.
DID YOU KNOW?
In a household with four people, a single flush toilet will use over 70, 000 litres a year, where as a dual flush toilet uses only 30, 000 litres. If you don’t already have one, install a dual flush toilet, you’ll save up to 8 litres of water every time you use the half flush instead of the full flush.
