HEALTHY AND ACTIVE MORETON

The new Healthy and Active Moreton guide is now available and is the perfect tool to stay healthy, active and connected with your community.  The guide is full of a range of local, low cost and subsidised fitness ideas to get the whole family moving.  The comprehensive guide will provide something new or motivating to kick start an active and healthy lifestyle.  Bookings and contact details for providers and programs are listed in the guide.  The 2015/16 Healthy and Active Moreton guide is now available at www.moretonbay.qld.gov.au/healthyactive or a hard copy can be picked up from Council’s Libraries and Customer Service Centres.

ARE YOU A CANDIDATE FOR AUSTRALIAN CITIZENSHIP

More than 800 Moreton Bay Region residents take out Australian Citizenship each year with many coming from within the distribution area of the Village Pump and throughout Division 11.  Did you know that the Rotary Club of Samford Valley, for many years, has conducted a local ceremony on Australia Day supported by our Federal member, Peter Dutton?  Some candidates for citizenship have not been aware of this local ceremony until they have either been allocated to another venue or taken citizenship at one of the earlier events which regularly take place around the Region.  If you or someone you know is due to take Australian citizenship over the next few months and would like to participate in our local unique ceremony, then discuss this with the Department of Immigration and Citizenship with whom your Citizenship arrangements are being made.

LOCAL PROJECTS

The major drainage project between Heathwood Street and Williams Street is now well advanced thanks to the fine weather and is on schedule for completion towards the end of October.

Council crews have also been undertaking reconstruction of Railway Street and at my request will be widening the bitumen seal at the intersection of Williams Street to eliminate a dust problem that has caused nuisance to nearby businesses.

DECADES FESTIVAL

Celebrating the best fashions, music and vehicles from the 50s through to the 90s will return in 2015 with headline acts Cold Chisel, The Living End and Something for Kate.  This October 31 is your chance to see Cold Chisel perform their classic hits at Pine Rivers Park for one night only as part of their only Brisbane show on their national tour. From experiencing the culinary trends of years past in the 50s’ Retro Diner and Milk Bar, to tripping down Memory Lane and dancing all night long in the Disco Bar this is a unique event unlike any other in South East Queensland.  Tickets are $99 and are available online at www.decadesfestival.com.au or by phoning 5433 2052.  Stay up to date by liking the Decades Facebook page at www.facebook.com/decadesfestival

MAGPIES – CAUTION

The peak magpie breeding/nesting season is currently underway and will continue for another month.  Council has installed signage at known “hotspots” to advise members of the public of the presence of the nesting birds.  Magpies are a protected bird and the best advice is to stay away from their nesting area.  Some helpful information is available at www.moretonbay.qld.gov.au/magpies

NBN PLANS FOR OUR AREA

As the rollout of the NBN picks up pace across Australia, the Samford and Dayboro areas are now within the planning phase of a fixed wireless service and as part of that process I have received advice from NBN that they will be holding community information sessions in Samford and Dayboro on afternoon/evenings of 21st and 22nd October respectively. Advertisements outlining details will appear in the Village Pump and Dayboro Grapevine.
